Zephyr Vocal EnsembleZephyr Vocal Ensemble is the only mixed a cappella ensemble in North Jersey singing a wide variety of musical genres. Founded in 2010 by Artistic Director Cherwyn Ambuter, Zephyr sings exclusively by memory and without a director so as to make an authentic and heartfelt connection directly with the audience. Zephyr's performing home is in Newton, but the ensemble travels throughout the Tri-State region and performed in nine separate appearances in 2011 around northern New Jersey and in New York State.
Zephyr is a small, auditioned ensemble of professional and professional-level singers which has capably sung challenging works such as Whitacre's Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine with only one singer on a part, and Allen Koepke's Wade in de Water - both without a conductor. The ensemble learns its parts at home, individually, and spends its rehearsals polishing the music and learning to feel it together in a tight ensemble. Movement is added to the music, where appropriate, by two professional choreographers. Zephyr's greatest strength is in classical music, but it also regularly presents world music, jazz (such as Swingle Singers arrangements), rock and popular music, reggae, and more. The group performs both in full-ensemble, and in small groups that feature its members. Zephyr has been invited as a featured guest performing ensemble in the concerts of Ridge Light Opera and the Orpheus Club Men's Chorus to the delight of the audiences, and is about to commission its first piece of music through the generosity of a listener who heard one of these performances. Rehearsals are Thursday evenings in Vernon, NJ. For more information visit our website. |
